Blue Star Contemporary is delighted to announce its 26th annual Red Dot on May 18, 2016, from 6 to 10 pm. This year’s fundraiser, which coincides with Blue Star’s thirtieth anniversary, celebrates arts patron Rick Liberto and his dear friend, the late artist Chuck Ramirez. These two have enormously supported and influenced the growth of a vibrant Blue Star Contemporary and the rich art landscape of San Antonio.

Chuck Ramirez (1962-2010), one of San Antonio’s most beloved artists, was a major force in the San Antonio art community before his untimely death. His work is included in national and international collections and frequently features in exhibitions around the world. His art is best known for employing the visual and conceptual techniques found in contemporary advertising and package design, isolating and re-contextualizing familiar objects to explore cultural identity, mortality, and consumerism through his photographs and installations.

This year’s Red Dot will feature 80+ artists including select limited editions work by Ramirez specially produced for Blue Star’s Red Dot. Three artworks from the rarely seen Dust Collection and Other Tchochke (1995) will be for sale during the evenings event alongside two artworks from the Careyes (2007) series and three artworks from the Words (2004) series. Edition 6 of 7 of Breakfast Tacos (pictured above) from the Seven Days (2004) series will be offered in a silent auction. In 2012, The Smithsonian American Art Museum purchased Ramirez’ limited edition large- format photograph, Seven Days: Breakfast Tacos, for the institution’s permanent collection.

The proceeds from the sales of these featured works will support Blue Star Contemporary and Sala Diaz/Casa Chuck. Casa Chuck Residency is a non-profit invitational program through which the organization provides critics, curators, and writers a haven for varied creative pursuits. The residency, which began in 2011, honors Ramirez’s legacy as a visionary artist, arts advocate, cultural maven, and bon vivant. The residency’s primary goals are to preserve Ramirez’ home as a site of social connectivity and cultural exchange, to foster the careers of exceptional individuals working in the contemporary arts, and to generate meaningful and lasting interchange between San Antonio and creative communities abroad.

Special thanks to Ruiz-Healy Art as the exclusive representative for the estate of Chuck Ramirez.
