Brittany Ham: New Surfaces Closing
December 2, 2016 6:00 pm - December 2, 2016 9:00 pm
Join us for the closing reception of Brittany Ham: New Surfaces, an exhibition of new works created by Ham while in residence at Hello Studio. Brittany Ham is a San Antonio-based artist that works with themes of contemporary abstract painting, digital surface, and bodily construction. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University at San Marcos in 2012, and recently received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2016. Her work has been featured in the publication New American Paintings and was recently shown at ART BUSAN’s art fair in Busan South, Korea.
With the advent of social media and image editing software the human body has become something of a Frankenstein monster; bodies are altered and presented in ways that seem to deny their physical nature through a disengagement with reality. The body that is presented to the world no longer must be bound by the rigidity of its form. Rather, one can present an entirely new appearance based on the creation of a new self via digital means.
Similarly, my paintings are Frankenstein surfaces. In the same way that the human body has adapted to digital modification, so too has painting. By employing digital tools to generate content and forms in my paintings I explore the interaction between digital application and traditional practice.
Digital imaging practices become a point of entry for the development of new approaches to painting that use old tricks. By exploring the boundaries of digital mark making, traditional application, and “new” surface I play with the idea of imitation and imperfection through the synthesis of new technology and historical process.
