Closing Reception Performances by Christie Blizard
Blue Star Contemporary
February 4, 2016 8:00 pm - February 4, 2016 9:00 pm
Blue Star Contemporary is pleased to present the third addition to “Gift: An Exquisite Exhibition” and a closing reception performance on Thursday, February 4, 2016, from 8-9 PM and Friday, February 5th, 2016, from 7-7:30 PM. This exhibition project explores art as a gift economy. In their alternative to market system, wealth is distributed through an act of giving, in contrast to barter or commercial transactions. Even when motivated by altruism, giving generates benefit for the giver as well, typically in the form of social connections.
In response to Lawrence Weiner’s Broken Off installation in Gift: An Exquisite Exhibition, San Antonio artist Christie Blizard has developed two performances in collaboration with a punk band and a break-dancer. On Thursday, February 4 from 8-9pm Blue Star Contemporary presents “The Charm of Abstraction”, this performance features punk band The Blue Caravans, who will play various songs on broken hearts. On Friday, February 5 from 7-8pm Blue Star Contemporary presents “Regulation”, this performance features break-dancer, Timstuh.
Christie Blizard is directly correlating this theme into her performances and her addition of artwork to “Gift: An Exquisite Exhibition”. Considering the perpetual brokenness and mutability of painting and ideas around breaking and the broken, the performances act as moving sculptures. The performances exist as temporal gifts to visitors. Besides, to the two performances Blizzard has created a third gift – “The Brokenness of Painting (free to have)”. The work is a series of 240 small paintings (each 2×3”) presented in Blue Star’s entrance for visitors to take.
