Cruz Ortiz is the champion of a particularly exuberant strain of the South Texas rascuache/DIY aesthetic best known for Spanglish wordplay, printmaking (Snake Hawk Press), installation, performance, video, or maybe his signature Absolut Vodka bottle. And although he has exhibited work at three of four of FL!GHT’s incarnations (over the course of more than a decade), rarely has any of it been figurative painting. The same can be said for the art he’s made for The Lourve in Paris, Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, The Blue Coat Museum in Liverpool, LACMA on the left coast, Artpace up the street, and SAMA up the river. That’s why were thrilled to dedicate the entirety of what would typically be our salon-style gallery to this rare treat: portraits, characters, and missions in living color.
