Mockingbird Handprints

“Traditional crazy quilts were made from scraps of cloth; leftovers from other quilt projects. The random placement of the pieces, often enhanced with hand embroidery, created a nonsensical pattern while making the most of bits and pieces that weren’t large enough to use another way.

When I began collaging single, and mismatched vintage quilt blocks, my husband commented that I was completing a story begun by an unknown maker. We wondered why blocks never made it into a quilt? What happened to the woman who probably started in earnest, but never followed through by finishing the quilt? These unanswerable questions led to imagining untold stories as I worked on this series. The random stack of blocks turned into crazy quilts in the best sense of exploding color and pattern. If only they could speak, what crazy stories would they tell?”
