La Luz de San Anto is a San Antonio love story told by three actors and a five-piece band in one hour. This story encompasses the varied cultures of San Antonio, and is set in the fictional ice house for which the play is named. The characters of the story are a man, Sal, a working class Chicano, and Allie, an emergency room nurse working at a San Antonio hospital, and Gil, the proprietor of the Icehouse. Allie and Sal meet at La Luz, and as their story progresses, it is underscored by the music of a “live juke box,” the live, onstage band. The songs played by the band reflect the various musical influences found in San Antonio venues for many years via the traditional icehouse juke box that led to the creation of the “San Antonio sound.”
Admission is free of charge. La Luz de San Anto is made possible through a grant from the City of San Antonio Department of Culture and Creative Development.
