Q&A with Giovanna DiZurita

This week on Blue Star Blog, we’re sitting down to chat with a powerhouse of a local artist, Giovanna DiZurita. This Renaissance woman seems to do it all: apparel, accessories, canvas prints, custom apparel and home décor.

Giovanna DiZurita is a Mexican-American artist that was introduced to the world of art by her aunt Sofia. From her childhood years, she remembers how her body and mind always craved the fascinating world of lines and scribbles. She embraces every painting as a new adventure allowing her to fall in love with art. For DiZurita, art was her destiny and salvation, art was the secret language to represent her own emotional roller coaster in her teenage years, after going through the deportation of her parents and staying alone in a strange place. During a time of turbulence art whispered back to her the secret world where her imagination was the sole creator, giving her the self-validation of her abilities and talents as an artist.

Your work is so bright and colorful, is a that a reflection of you and your personality?
My colorful work is a representation of everything in life I want to attract and feel. I use my work as what I call Happiness Therapy. In a world that gets bombarded with bad news, I feel the obligation of bringing some light and joy through my colorful artwork.  Art allows me to jump into the fantasy world within my mind and bring that world into reality. Art is the evidence that imagination and creation can meet in the same time and space. My color palette is the true definition behind the emotions of my art.

You paint animals, people, landscape/city scenes; is there one thing in particular that you love to focus on?

My inspiration rises from the colors of nature and the beauty of all living organisms, fueled by the everyday connection I get with all the things that surround my life. Every painting would probably tell you a very different story about me. Working from a range of unique interpretations, I am deeply attached with everything that deals with my emotional state and the duality of my internal balance, trying to develop the best version of myself. No matter the subject or element I paint, I love to focus on painting hidden messages and stories for every painting.

You also have a clothing line based off your works of art. Tell us a little about how that came to be.

Challenging the status quo is the core behavior that allows me to embrace life with the desire to innovate and evolve constantly. The purpose behind my brand is to allow everyone to become a “Walking Masterpiece” by wearing art. I am very honored to have won the Renovar Brand of the Year award, at the San Antonio Fashion Awards.

And something we ask all our featured guests….

Why do you think places like Blue Star are so important for local creative communities?

I believe the Blue Star Arts Complex has become like the temple of art. Galleries, artists and art aficionados of all walks of life gather to share and enjoy the talents within our city. Blue Star has become a flagship channel in bringing our community together via the arts.

“Art is the window which unveils my inner thoughts. My art is the secret language of my dance; portraying every message with the footprints I leave behind on the canvas. Art allows me to jump into the fantasy world within my mind and bring that world into reality. Art is the evidence that imagination and creation can meet in the same time and space. My color palette is the true definition behind the emotions of my art.” – Giovanna DiZurita
