The Perfect San Antonio Saturday at Blue Star

Step 1: be an early riser. Wildlife is rambunctious in the morning on the river walk. Expect to see turtles, heaps of bird species, fish and like it or not swimming snakes! Park at Blue Star (no parking? Park at Brackenridge High School – during non-school hours only of course), grab a coffee at Halcyon and take a one mile stroll north to E Nueva. This can be your turnaround point, on your way back, walk on the opposite side of the river or better yet, take a tour through the historic King William District. Homes on the south bank of the San Antonio River have been preserved and restored. Keep cool under the shade of the stoic trees and explore what was once the most elegant section of the city. A thriving, trendy community, King William/Southtown continues to attract popular restaurants and shops, make sure you stroll up and down S. Alamo to check them out!

Our property map will help you easily navigate Blue Star Arts Complex upon your return and by this time you’ve probably worked up an appetite! Both Stella Public House and Halcyon serve up delicious brunches that include $1 mimosas. Grab a spot on the patio or enjoy the hustle and bustle of eager weekend warriors inside.

As luck would have it, Blue Star’s retail shops open right when you finish brunch! Browse through the eclectic mix of art and home accents at Mockingbird Handprints, owner Jane Bishop designs and dyes custom textiles for interiors and clothing, so be prepared to take home a unique piece.

Your eyes will have trouble deciding what to look at in San Angel Folk Art, voted Best Folk Art Collection in the US and Best of San Antonio’s Art Galleries, there are heaps of fabulous finds.

Pop into Choice Goods – Tatum Originals – grab a t-shirt, stickers, skateboard, art print, pins… have we got your attention? It’s a really cool shop and you enter it from the back. Find the wooden stairs and head on in!

Blue Star Contemporary, Cinnabar, Fl!ght Gallery and UTSA’s Terminal 136 are a few feet from each other and house a variety of exhibitions and programs. Have a look at each of their websites to see what’s on display and get ready to give your eyes a feast. Unpretentious and welcoming, Blue Star’s galleries love visitors whether you are an art fanatic or not.

Now it’s time for a bike ride. Blue Star Bike Shop has the best rental gear in town. Electra bicycles, electrical assist bikes, fixed gears, cruisers, road bikes and kids bikes, the options are endless and they have the perfect accessories to pair with them. Grab some drinks and food to go from Blue Star Provisions, pack them in your bike’s saddle bag or basket and head south. The San Antonio Mission Trail is bikeable with lots to see. Here’s a route map to get you started, go for as long as you like and stop at one of the many missions and parks for a snack when your stomachs start to grumble.

You’ve worked up a sweat and thirst by the time you roll back into Blue Star. Drop your bikes off and walk a few steps over to the Blue Star Brewing Co. Known for fresh made organic beer, you’ll be satiated in no time. Have dinner here while watching a Spurs game or head over to Sukeban for a champagne flight and sushi.

No Saturday is complete without dessert. South Alamode serves up the BEST gelato in town. They import every ingredient they can from Italy, the rest are sourced locally. The owners lived in Italy and studied as a Gelato apprentice, yes, that’s a thing! But don’t take our word for it, you must try it yourself.

Not ready to go home yet? Brick at Blue Star often has events throughout the day and into the evenings. Think art markets, performances, talks, book sales, dance lessons and parties, concerts and even viewings of shows like The Walking Dead.

Whew! What a day. If you didn’t have time to get it all done, come back on Sunday or better yet, check out First Thursday’s and First Friday’s. Our galleries often host exhibition openings on the first Thursday of the month and Southtown is hoping on the first Friday with vendors lining the streets and lots going on at Blue Star Complex! Stay in the know by signing up for our monthly newsletter here and checking our frequently updated events page.
